WTF?! Wednesday – ‘Na’ is not a lyric

Today’s WTF?! Wednesday features a song I actually kind of like. Which is a little bit “le gasp”-y because it’s a devoutly pop song, and I tend to be a devoutly not-pop person. Like, to the extent that someone said, in reference to me, “She doesn’t look like the type who would buy the new Beyoncé CD.” Which I’m not. But still… in what way does the type who would buy the new Beyoncé CD look different from me? What, exactly, does a Beyoncé fan look like?

Ohh, I see the difference now...

But I digress.

This pop song has recently come back into my consciousness and immediately earned a top slot on WTF?!W. It’s a Gwen Stefani song… you know you know the one. It’s catchy, it’s quirky, it’s cute… it’s got some really crap-tastic lyrics.

"Yeah, they're real... I don't think they *make* fake abs, do they?"

Which isn’t to say that this particular song doesn’t have a couple of KA lyrics as well, but the ones I’m talking about today are so bad as to be unforgivable. Each line of this section makes no sense in the context of the song, the section itself, or reality. NONE. nada. Zero sense is made. I’m pretty sure that everyone’s reaction, upon hearing this song for the first time, was literally to say “WTF?!”

Oh, and… just a warning, this song is going to be stuck in your head for the rest of the day. My sincerest apologies.

If I was a rich girl
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na
See, I’d have all the money in the world
If I was a wealthy girl

Kick-Ass Lyrics for the Rebellious

I was recently introduced to what is probably going to be the Next Big Thing (if it isn’t already, I’m usually way behind on this stuff). It’s a program called Spotify, and if you’re a music-loving fiend I recommend it. It’s basically the same as iTunes, if your personal iTunes collection had EVERY SONG EVER. Fo’ FREE.

Ok, that’s a God-awful explanation, so let me try again. Here’s how it works: 1) Download Spotify on your computer for free. 2) Listen to whatever music you like on your computer for free. 3) If you don’t like occasional advertisements, or if you want to be able to use Spotify on your smartphone, pay them $5 or $10 per  month. Otherwise, continue listening to whatever music you like on your computer for free.

The biggest challenge I’m facing in using Spotify is deciding what to listen to. I am paralyzed by options. Right now I’m listening to O.A.R., which is not one of my favorites, but it is one of my boyfriend’s favorites. They’re kind of a ska/alternative band, good music to listen to while relaxing on the couch on a nice Saturday. Which is what I’m doing now.

O.A.R. have a new album called King, and it’s a pretty good listen. I just heard on it what are definitely today’s kick-ass lyrics. Please stand by.

Ooo floaty

You take the low, I’ll take the high
You lock the gate, I hear the quiet
Everybody got a problem with the way I live
I don’t wanna go to Heaven if I can’t get in

Kick-Ass Lyrics for the Madly in Love

There’s not much more to be said than that.  Here’s a link to listen to the full song. If you are madly in love, I suspect you’ll enjoy it.

Iron and Wine, not Jesus. Not Zach Galifianakis either.

Love is a dress that you made
Long to hide your knees
Love to say this to your face
I’ll love you only

WTF?! Wednesday

What is WTF?! Wednesday? Think of it as the antithesis of your standard edition of Kick-Ass Lyrics of the Day. This is a showcase of some of the best of the worst lyrics I can find; the laughably lame, the unendingly uninspiring, the insultingly inane. The songs that don’t make sense, or sound like something you wrote in your middle school diary when you were crushing on the boy in the 3rd row. I’ll be scraping the bottom of the barrel of my music collection and scouring the radio for the latest from Hannah Montana and Toby Keith.  The worse, the better.

I’m kind of excited! This could be fun! Don’t be afraid to make suggestions!

For the first edition of WTFW I’m going to pull out a song from 2004 that has been under my skin for the last seven years. The whole song is so simple, so singsong-y, so predictable, it just… blah! It leaves a funny taste in your mouth when you sing along. Which you can do from the first time you ever hear it. Because a two-year old could have written it after watching a Barney Sing-a-long. This band has other songs that range from Meh to Pretty Decent, but this particular offering somehow manages to suck andblow at the same time. Unfortunately, it’s also the band’s most commercially popular song (thanks, Wikipedia) and peaked at #2 on Billboard, number freaking one on Modern Rock Tracks.

More like Hoobastink.

You should be ashamed of yourselves, America. Go think about what you’ve done.

I’m not a perfect person
There’s [sic] many things I wish I didn’t do

But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you

-The Reason

KALOTD – Two Headed Boy

Today’s kick-ass lyric of the day is from Two Headed Boy, which is actually by Neutral Milk Hotel (craziest name for a band ever? I think yes), but I’m going to give credit to Jesse Lacey. Because his cover is the version I know. And it’s my blog. Also I think the official name for this song is “Two Headed Boy Part 2,” in case you go to look it up on YouTube, which you should.

I don’t even care a little that this song makes no sense. It’s beautiful. There is so much lyrical cash-money it was hard to narrow it down, but I feel comfortable going with this selection:

And it my dreams you’re alive and you’re crying
While your mouth moves in mine soft and sweet
Rings of flowers ’round your eyes and I love you
For the rest of your life
You will see

I Will Follow Anyone Who Brings Me To You

Just heard a new song: Every Thug Needs a Lady by Alkaline Trio.

I’m in love with the lyrics. Feast your heart on this:

You know I came here
When I needed your soft voice

I needed to hear something that sounded like an answer
Now I stay here, and every day I get one

Just Lyrics

No new post today, just lyrics. Matt Nathanson has been the one exception to my recent rant about my favorite artists putting out sucky new music; his new album “Modern Love”, while decidedly different from his older albums (which I think shows growth and diversity, exactly what you want to see from your favorites), is lovely. His voice is just so creamy smooth, fluid and intense, the perfect combination of everything I want to listen to, and the lyrics are never bland or cliche.

Apparently, though, I’ve mostly only listened to it as an album and never really listened to the individual songs out of the context, aside from the song Faster, which is AWESOME, just a brilliant song.  I was just listening to my iTunes on shuffle and this gem came on which I could swear I’ve never heard before. Here’s my favorite part:

Just come on down to the bottom of the sea
Just come on down here
Yeah, there’s room right next to me
I’m tired of getting even
Let’s get odd odd baby
And live life at the bottom of the sea
